The Department of Mental Health is pushing for service providers to seek alternatives to tradition residential services. It is imperative that we as advocates for people with disabilities make the necessary changes in teaching and encouraging independent living for those who are interested and capable. Whereas long-term group home living may be suitable and preferable for one person, it may not meet the needs and wants of another individual. This is why AWE Arc is committed to tailoring services to the needs of each person receiving services.
Over the next year, we will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity in building a transition-style home in Prattville. This home will house up to two adults with Disabilities who are interested in pursuing independent living. Staffing will be available to the extent that the person requires. We expect for the build to start within the next year. If you are interesting in helping with this build, please notify Jess Butrica at the Smith Center (smithctr.jess@yahoo.com) or by phone at the number at the top of this page. Interested in making a difference? Support us by volunteering with this build or donating supplies! We are also accepting monetary donations that will help fund the project. Keep an eye on our site to read updates on our progress! We are certainly excited to see what this can become. Most importantly, we want to support people in pursuing their dream for the future! |
